Walmart is adding a further 500 pickup towers to its U.S. stores this year.
The company introduced these towers, which dispense customers’ online purchases, at nearly 200 stores last year. To use one, a customer shops online as usual and then receives an e-mail indication when the purchase is available in the tower at the local store. At the store, the customer scans a bar code printed from the kiosk computer and the item is sent down direct through the tower.
Walmart says that upwards of half a million orders have been retrieved through these towers since their launch. The company plans to roll out more towers across the country to reach possibly 700 stores by year-end. These new towers will be getting a feature that enables shoppers to pick up larger items that did not fit before, such as televisions. Every new tower installed will also come equipped with pickup lockers at which these larger purchases may be retrieved.
