Walmart expands autonomous-vehicle grocery delivery program

January 9, 2019

Walmart has launched a program with another autonomous-vehicle company as part of its goal to offer home-delivered groceries in 100 metropolitan areas by the end of its current fiscal year.

The retailer has signed up with Udelv to use its autonomous vans to test home delivery in Surprise, Ariz.

"We want to make sure we stay on the cutting edge of grocery delivery by exploring what's new and next," said Tom Ward, senior vice president of Walmart's digital operations in the U.S., on Tuesday in a blog post.

Walmart is currently running other pilot programs for self-driving cars, with Ford and with Alphabet’s Waymo, as it strives to provide home delivery to some 40 percent of U.S. households during the current fiscal year, reports CNBC. This year the company intends to bring an additional 800 stores into the program.

U.S. consumer spending on online groceries is projected to rise by 15 percent, accounting for 6.3 percent of overall sales, says CNBC, citing advisory group Brick Meets Click.
