U.S. consumer support for vaccine passports is growing

Fifty-seven percent of U.S. consumers are more likely to patronize businesses or companies that require customers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter their stores or use their services, and 59% are more likely to patronize businesses or companies that require all their employees to be vaccinated, according to ICSC’s latest Coronavirus Consumer Survey. Conducted September 10 to 12, it surveyed 1,013 U.S. consumers.

Sixty-two percent support requiring vaccine passports for dining indoors at restaurants or bars, up from 47% in mid-May. Fifty-nine percent support requiring vaccine passports for shopping in malls, up from 47% in mid-May. And 61% support requiring vaccine passports for shopping inside physical stores, up from 47% in mid-May. Meanwhile, 58% support requiring vaccine passports for visiting personal services establishments like spas, massage parlors or hair, nail and tanning salons. And 55% support requiring vaccine passports to work out inside gyms or fitness centers.

Seventy-one percent of U.S. consumers are concerned about the rise of delta variant cases around the country, down from 76% two weeks earlier, and 56% are comfortable with how their state and local communities are handling COVID-19, down from 59%. Still, 63% currently engage in a normal level of out-of-home activity, up from 58% two weeks earlier.

More consumers are visiting gyms, malls, stores, theaters and personal services establishments than they were two weeks earlier. Consumers visiting personal services establishments grew 2 percentage points, to 41%. And 30% are visiting movie theaters, up from 26%, while 26% are working out at gyms or fitness centers, up 2 percentage points.

According to ICSC’s survey, consumers dining indoors at restaurants, bars or other eating places climbed 5 percentage points from two weeks earlier, to 59%. Those dining outdoors also climbed 5 percentage points, to 60%. Fifty-one percent of U.S. consumers are shopping inside malls, up from 46% two weeks earlier. And 66% are shopping or browsing inside physical stores, up from 62%.
