The National Retail Federation (NRF) released its 2023 National Retail Security Survey this week, reporting that retail losses and ORC-related violence have increased.
When taken as a percentage of total retail sales in 2022, shrink accounted for $112.1 billion in losses, up from $93.9 billion in 2021 and 28% of respondents said they reported closing a specific store location.
More than two-thirds (67%) of survey respondents said they were seeing even more violence and aggression from ORC perpetrators compared with one year ago. The top five cities/metropolitan areas affected by ORC in the past year were Los Angeles, San Francisco/Oakland, Houston, New York and Seattle.
“ORC remains a growing threat and is escalating in terms of violence, prevalence and impact on communities,” ICSC executive vice president for Government Relations and Public Policy Betsy Laird said. “There is much more work to be done by law enforcement, elected officials and the retail community to address the scope and scale of the problem.”
A separate report by D & D Daily also shows a rise in ORC numbers compared to 2022.
Legislation to combat ORC remains a critical priority for ICSC, which continues to advocate for passage of the Combating Organized Crime Act of 2023. Click here to add your voice.
