More states requiring masks in public spaces

July 9, 2020

A growing number of states are issuing mask mandates as COVID-19 numbers rise in some areas. As of July 9, 24 states had statewide orders mandating their use in public spaces. These include large population centers like California, New York and Texas.

In addition, an increasing number of cities and towns are passing facemask requirements in areas that have not instituted state mandates. Notable metros include Atlanta, Denver, Phoenix and multiple parts of Florida, such as Tampa, Broward County and Miami-Dade County.

Of the states that have taken action, nine also have signage requirements in place (California, Washington DC, Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington). Most of the signage requirements state that retail and restaurant establishments must post notices at the entrance of the establishment announcing that face coverings are required per Executive Order.

States (in teal) currently requiring face coverings include CA, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, KS, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, NV, NJ, NM, NY, NC, OR, PA, RI, TX, VA, WA and WV.
