On June 30, Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed into law legislation requiring out-of-state online retailers to collect sales taxes on purchases made by residents.
“This is a major milestone and an important step for modernizing retail and state and local revenues,” said Jennifer Platt, ICSC’s vice president of federal operations.
In the wake of the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court South Dakota v. Wayfair case, most states were quick to utilize their new authority to collect online sales taxes, leveling the playing field for community-based brick-and-mortar retailers. In April, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law an online sales tax bill, leaving Missouri as the last state with a sales tax to enact such legislation.
In May, the Missouri House voted 145-6 to send an online sales tax bill to the governor, who had previously signaled his support for the measure.
