London mayor approves Westfield-Hammerson mall

January 9, 2018

Westfield Corp.’s and Hammerson's plans to create a third major mall in London have received the green light from the city’s mayor. Construction on the £1.4 billion (nearly $1.9 billion) center, in the borough of Croydon, is scheduled to begin next year, through a joint venture called the Croydon Partnership. Besides retail, the 1.5 million-square-foot mall will contain nearly 1,000 homes as well as dining and leisure options, including a multiscreen cinema.

Westfield’s existing two malls in the city are Westfield London, in the West End, and Westfield Stratford, to the east. Croydon is in South London.

“This development will play a key role in unlocking the borough’s potential and is set to deliver huge economic benefits to residents and businesses in the borough,” Mayor Sadiq Khan was quoted as saying in City A.M. “It will also attract many visitors to its brand-new leisure facilities and public spaces. I’m confident the benefits of this scheme will be felt for generations to come.”
