Kroger and Walgreens are expanding a partnership through which they will test grocery sections in 13 drugstores.
Walgreens shoppers will have some 2,300 grocery items to choose from, including Kroger Home Chef meal kits, in Kroger Express sections within the drugstores, the companies announced in a press release. Starting this week, Home Chef meal kits are available at 65 Walgreens stores in the Chicago area. "The Kroger Express selection will include Home Chef meal kits, national products and Kroger's popular Our Brands products, highlighting America's largest natural and organic brand, Simple Truth, along with dairy, meat, produce, frozen and meal solutions," the announcement said.
One of the test stores, in Florence, Ky., is already open, with the others to follow next year. All the stores will be in Kentucky, close to Kroger’s headquarters.
"The Kroger Express concept creates easy access to our most popular Our Brands products through a fill-in grocery shopping experience for Walgreens customers, and our Home Chef Express meal kits provide customers with an on-demand solution for tonight's dinner," said Robert Clark, Kroger's senior vice president of merchandising.
This is one of several partnerships Kroger has formed to expand the number of its sales channels. This year the company announced an agreement with China’s Alibaba Group Holding and began selling dietary supplements and private-label natural and organic products on Alibaba’s Tmall Global site.
