NEW YORK, May 21, 2017 – The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) has announced the winners of the 2017 VIVA Awards, honoring the retail real estate industry’s most cutting-edge properties, innovative solutions, and creative responses to market trends. The awards were presented during a ceremony at RECon, the premier retail real estate convention held in Las Vegas.
The global awards program recognized the following four properties, spanning four countries, for outstanding achievement in marketing, design and development, and retail.
Sustainability Winner: Mall of Istanbul, located in Istanbul, Turkey
The Mall of Istanbul spans more than 162 thousand square meters and includes four residential blocks of offices, entertainment, dining options and 350 retailers. A LEED Gold Certified building, the Mall of Istanbul incorporates skylight roofing, a greywater drainage system and 90% usage rate of LED lights. With five separate atriums located within the mall, all of the wide mall galleries are connected and provide an abundance of natural light to visitors inside.
Design and Development Winner: Markthal Rotterdam located in Rotterdam, Netherlands
Markthal Rotterdam is honored for it’s unique shape and colorful interior complemented by stunning artwork and 3D photographic images. Housing one of The Netherland’s largest food markets of its kind, Markthal Rotterdam provides 9,600 square meters of food, retailers, high-end apartments and parking levels that were partially built underwater to accommodate 1,200 vehicles. Developed by Provast in collaboration with owners Klepierre Management Nederland BV and designed by MVRDV and Arno Coenen en Iris Roskam, the Markthal Rotterdam has maintained itself as the gem of Rotterdam. Within the first 18 months of operation, more than 8 million people visited this new development establishing it as a popular urban meeting place.
Marketing Winner: “LIGHTROOM” at the Metropolis at Metrotown located in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
The Lightroom, a twenty foot by thirty-five foot room paneled in mirror tiles allowed visitors to the Metropolis at Metrotown to upload images from their social media site and view them against a backdrop of twinkling lights. Over 78,000 people visited this first of its kind installation which generated 1.96 million digital media impressions and increased traffic inside the Metropolis at Metrotown by 2% in traffic and 13% in speciality retail sales.
Retail Store Winner: Hudson Eats at Brookfield Place located in New York, New York
Hudson Eats, a vibrant, upscale dining terrace in lower Manhattan, features a curated range of fast-casual selections from a variety of chef-inspired and local eateries. Designed in collaboration with BCV Architects, AvroKO and SpectorGroup the food destination features handmade tile walls, steel portals, custom lighting, marble and wood tables and seating for up to 600 diners with expansive views of the Hudson River. Hudson eats has set a new and elevated standard for food hall dining.
