Hurricane Relief

October 10, 2024

“It’s hard to imagine that not even two weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated communities in the Southeast, some of those same areas were hit by Hurricane Milton last night. Most importantly, we hope that your families and friends are safe,” ICSC president and CEO Tom McGee wrote in an email sent on Thursday to ICSC members impacted by the storm. The need for help in the Southeast will continue. Below are some ways to pitch in.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is helping unify loved ones and providing immediate help, including running shelters. It also offers information to help people survive and recover physically, emotionally and financially. According to its website, “Hundreds of disaster workers are on the ground helping people affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. The Red Cross is focused on providing shelter, food, relief supplies and comfort.”

Access the resources discussed above or learn how volunteer or start a peer-to-peer fundraiser.

Donate to help people affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene.

United Way

“United Way has quickly mobilized to bring relief to the communities affected, leveraging deep-rooted community partnerships to deliver critical resources and support,” according to its website. “Together, we’re activating ongoing rescue and recovery efforts across these areas, leveraging the power of collective action in the face of disaster.”

Federal Emergency Management Agency

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website reports: “More than 8,000 federal workers from all parts of the country are supporting the response efforts in six states and three Tribal Nations for both Hurricanes Helene and Milton.”

Apply for assistance by visiting www.disasterassistance.gov, calling 800-621-3362 or downloading the FEMA app.

FEMA suggests visiting National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster if you want to volunteer.

The Humane Society of the United States

The Humane Society of the United States posted on its website: “Our Animal Rescue Team has been rushing to help transport animals in shelters to safety as Hurricane Milton makes landfall. While we do this, our team is still working to help in the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Helene.”

State-Specific Efforts

Florida

“The Florida Disaster Fund is the State of Florida’s official private fund established to assist Florida’s communities as they respond to and recover during times of emergency or disaster,” according to Volunteer Florida. “In partnership with the public sector, private sector and other non-governmental organizations, the Florida Disaster Fund supports response and recovery activities.” Donate here.

Georgia

The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency is collecting information from people who want to volunteer to help in Hurricane Helene’s recovery efforts. The agency also has an application for organizations that want to donate in response to Hurricane Helene. Monitor the agency’s page on Hurricane Milton for updates on how to support recovery and relief efforts.

North Carolina

The North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund helps with the unmet needs of hurricane victims, according to its website. Donate by mail at North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund, 20312 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, North Carolina, 27699. Or donate online here.

South Carolina

The Central Carolina Community Foundation’s One SC Fund is accepting donations to support relief, recovery and rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Helene. The state’s Emergency Management Division also has information for people interested in donating, including to food banks.

Tennessee

The office of Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has shared an in-depth guide to donations of money and supplies, as well as volunteering here.

McGee continued in his email to ICSC members in the impacted area: “The destruction following any natural disaster often shows us how connected we are across the Marketplaces Industry and how critical the industry is throughout the communities in which we live and operate. In the wake of hardship and challenging times, our members have always demonstrated their resiliency. This time will be no different.”
