Hawaii says aloha to shipping-container retail center trend

June 1, 2018

The recycled-shipping-container shopping center trend has come to Hawaii.

At the NoKa Fair Retail Boardwalk, in North Kapaa, Kauai, developer Jasper Properties is leasing up 19 picturesque, pastel-painted retail units to local vendors — including merchants of handmade accessories, fabric art and tea. The units are part of a redevelopment of the former Kauai Products Fair. These 8-by-20-foot stores were made by cutting 40-foot shipping containers in half and then adding French doors on each side.

“We are using what we have on Kauai instead of adding new construction," said Bryan Manganaro, NoKa Fair's director of operations, speaking to Hawaii News Now. “Shipping containers are something that’s happening all over the world as a trending movement, because of their versatility. It’s very easy to … create your vision through shipping containers and manipulate them to work for you.”

Recycled shipping containers are finding success in places as disparate as California; Las Vegas; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Some retail landlords are even using them for purposes other than stores.
