French sporting-goods chain Decathlon has opened its first U.S. store, an 8,300-square-foot streetfront unit in San Francisco. The company operates about 1,350 stores across 39 countries.
“Our purpose is to make sports accessible to all,” said COO Sophie O’Kelly De Gallagh, speaking to Snews. “We want to make sure everyone can enjoy more than one sport.”
This is not Decathlon's first attempt to enter the U.S. market. In the mid-2000s, the company bought a dozen existing sporting-goods stores that it then sold off a few years later.
“Right now, our web presence is available exclusively to California residents,” said O’Kelly De Gallagh. “But that will be rolling out nationwide in the coming months, because, while we are dedicated to a brick-and-mortar presence here, we also recognize the vast importance of a healthy e-commerce platform.”
