Retailers adding UPS pickup spots to thousands of stores

UPS will add thousands of package pickup and drop-off facilities to CVS and Michaels stores across the U.S., boosting convenience for its customers and generating more traffic for the retailers, the companies announced this week.

The collaboration with CVS will bring UPS Access Point locations to some 6,000 stores.

“This deal offers additional convenience to consumers in the e-commerce era,” said Kevin Warren, UPS chief marketing officer, in a joint statement the two companies issued this week. “Working with CVS Pharmacy demonstrates our commitment to increased customer choice and control with our global UPS My Choice network.”

There are currently about 40,000 UPS Access Point locations and 38,000 drop boxes around the world. UPS says it aims to have these services operating within five miles of roughly 90 percent of its U.S. consumers’ homes.

Through the UPS My Choice program, customers track deliveries, sign for packages in advance or divert them to other addresses and set vacation holds.

The additional Access Point locations will also boost the value of omni-channel operations for retailers everywhere.

“At Michaels, we are continuously exploring new ways and partners to make the omni-channel shopping experience easier and more convenient for our customers,” said Matthew Rubin, senior vice president of business development and growth at Michaels Stores, in a statement released by UPS.
