California retail centers add residential space

January 8, 2018

More shopping centers are adding residential units to accommodate changing lifestyles. In California, where the housing market is tight, thriving malls and struggling properties in need of a revamp alike are adding residential.

Santana Row in San Jose and Bay Street in Emeryville, for example, both offer modern apartments and condos above stores.

Hilltop Mall, in Richmond, will add 10,000 residential units. “We need housing, and we need a lot of it,” Richmond Mayor Tom Butt told The Mercury News. “We need it as quickly as possible. And anything like this that is planned or in the pipeline is a good sign.”

The former Vallco Mall in Cupertino will include housing in its redevelopment. And Westfield Valley Fair, in Santa Clara, plans to open its first residential building in 2019, followed in 2035 by a mixed-use development at a former Los Angeles mall.
